i do agree chain should have a bit more AL vs physical damage...not against magical damage tho. i sure wouldnt want to be in ring mail under fire magic.
but who cares about the look anyway, every freaking character got the same 2 types of armor, so its not like you are going to be any special...
oh yeah, you can dye like 10% of the surface of your armor...great. now you are truely unique.

Examine the costs of a Gladiator's chest and a Chainmail chest. You may notice that if you can't afford the tanned hide squares, that you can always settle for Chainmail.
And considering the number of people that beg for like 50 gold, this is a highly plausible situation for many people.
